The San Fernando Valley is a vibrant and densely urbanized region in Los Angeles County. It is home to the City of Los Angeles, as well as many other incorporated cities including Burbank, Calabasas, Glendale, Hidden Hills, and San Fernando.
The Valley’s history is one of human encroachment and transformation from a pristine natural environment to a complex, man-dominated ecosystem of suburban houses, backyard gardens, businesses, streets, and freeways. Before the arrival of European settlers, the Valley was home to a number of Native American communities, most of which had specialized ecological niches that sheltered them from drought, flood, and predators.
The valley floor was carpeted with a diverse grassland (or prairie) of colorful wildflowers, shrubs, and grasses. In addition, riparian corridors of willow (Salix spp.), alder (Alnus rhombifolia), and sycamore (Platanus racemosa) grew along the Los Angeles River, streams, and creeks that crisscrossed the Valley.
Throughout the Valley, a variety of unique, hillside habitats still exist, including chaparral (Chrysoplum opulus), coastal sage scrub, and woodland. These areas provide habitat for many mammals including bobcats (Felis rufus), mountain lions (Felis concolor), coyotes, and California thrashers, as well as birds such as Wrentits, Western Scrub-Jays, Anna’s Hummingbirds, and California Quail.
The introduction of intense livestock grazing (a new mode of disturbance) severely disrupted the San Fernando Valley’s prairie and grasslands in the 19th century. This new practice killed many wild plants and created a new, human-dominated ecosystem. It also negatively affected many native species in unexpected ways, resulting in extinctions and the destruction of entire communities.
